The Directorate of Medical Education and Training (DME) oversees the counselling process in the state of Tamil Nadu. According to the National Medical Commission (NMC), there are 12,050 MBBS and 3,100 BDS seats in 77 medical and 32 dental colleges, respectively, across the state. While 85% of the government seats in Tamil Nadu State come under the state quota, the remaining 15% of the seats fall under the AIQ quota. The state has a total of 12,050 MBBS and 3,100 BDS seats in 77 medical and 32 dental colleges.

Counselling Authority

 

All India Quota

 

15% of the total government seats come under this quota. MCC conducts counselling for these seats on behalf of the DGHS, overseen by MoHFW.

 

 

Deemed Universities

 

MCC is responsible for the counselling of 100% of seats at deemed universities on behalf of the DGHS, overseen by MoHFW.

 

 

State Quota

 

85% of the seats in government colleges are counselled by the Tamil Nadu Selection

 Committee, with the guidelines provided by MCC and DME.

 

 

Private/ Minority Institutes

 

100% counselling at private medical colleges is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee, with the guidelines provided by DME.

This type of reservation offers opportunities to candidates across OC, BC, BCM, MBC, SC, SCA, and ST. MBBS Seat Distribution 2025 in Private Tamil Nadu State Medical Colleges

 

The counselling for 100% of the medical seats in private medical colleges is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee, in accordance with the orders from the DME. The private medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are divided into 3 types,

 

  • Minority
  • Non-minority
  • State Universities

 

 

  • Minority Private Tamil Nadu State Medical Colleges: These types of colleges are owned and operated by the minority groups. There are 2 minority groups in Tamil Nadu, which include the Linguistic and Religious. Christian Medical College, Vellore and Panimalar Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Chennai are examples of religious private minority medical colleges. Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital, Perambalur and Annapoorna Medical College and Hospital, Salem District are examples of Linguistic private minority medical colleges.

  • Non-minority Private Tamil Nadu State Medical Colleges: These are colleges that are not affiliated with any particular minority group. Indira Medical College & Hospitals, Thiruvallur and KMCH Institute of Health Sciences & Research, Coimbatore are examples of non-minority private medical colleges.

  • State University Colleges: Some private medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are affiliated with the state universities. The curriculum in these colleges are decided by the universities that they are affiliated with. J R Medical College and Research, Villupuram, which is affiliated with the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research is an example of a state university college.
