While 85% of the government seats in Tamil Nadu State come under the state quota, the remaining 15% of the seats fall under the AIQ quota. The state has a total of 12,050 MBBS and 3,100 BDS seats in 77 medical and 32 dental colleges.

The counselling for 100% of the medical seats in private medical colleges is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Selection Committee, in accordance with the orders from the DME. The private medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are divided into 3 types,

 

• Minority
• Non-minority
• State Universities

 

 

• Minority Private Tamil Nadu State Medical Colleges: These types of colleges are owned and operated by the minority groups. There are 2 minority groups in Tamil Nadu, which include the Linguistic and Religious. Christian Medical College, Vellore and Panimalar Medical College Hospital & Research Institute, Chennai are examples of religious private minority medical colleges. Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital, Perambalur and Annapoorna Medical College and Hospital, Salem District are examples of Linguistic private minority medical colleges.
  
  
• Non-minority Private Tamil Nadu State Medical Colleges: These are colleges that are not affiliated with any particular minority group. Indira Medical College & Hospitals, Thiruvallur and KMCH Institute of Health Sciences & Research, Coimbatore are examples of non-minority private medical colleges.
  
  
• State University Colleges: Some private medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are affiliated with the state universities.
