Of these, 1,08,738 seats participated in counselling, while the commission withdrew five colleges' seats. 674 colleges submitted their admitted students list, consisting of 1,05,441 admitted seats.

Vacant Medical Seats by Institute-Type
Out of the overall intake capacity of 1,08,988 seats across various institutions, 1,08,738 seats participated in submitting admitted student lists. This signifies a high level of engagement from both colleges and prospective students.
However, the number of students admitted fell slightly short at 1,07,853, indicating a minor variance in the conversion rate between participation and actual admission. Notably, 115 seats were left unutilized, highlighting the need for further enhancement of the allocation process to ensure maximum utilization of available seats.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) also provides a detailed breakdown of the 115 vacant seats across various medical colleges in India for 2023, categorized by institute type. Deemed institutions accounted for the most vacant seats, totaling 51.
Furthermore, government medical colleges reported 45 vacant seats. Private medical colleges, known for their diverse offerings and often competitive admission processes, reported 19 vacant seats. While comparatively lower, these vacancies warrant attention to ensure efficient seat allocation and access to medical education opportunities
Institutes with No Update on the Admitted Student List
Of the 703 medical colleges the National Medical Commission approved, 674 institutes submitted their lists of admitted students, totaling 1,05,441 seats. Apart from the 115 vacant seats across 57 colleges, 20 AIIMS and 2 JIPMER institutes, which have 2,412 seats, are yet to update their lists of admitted students. Additionally, 7 colleges with a total of 770 seats have also not updated their lists.
All but one of the above-listed colleges are Government institutes, except Chintpurni Medical College, Gurdaspur, in Punjab, a private medical college offering 150 seats. In addition to the vacant seats, we can also analyze colleges from states that failed to submit their Admitted Student List to the National Medical Commission.
Government Medical Colleges in Purnea (Bihar), Doda (Kashmir), and Bhawanipatna (Odisha) offer 100 seats each. The Autonomous State Medical College in Uttar Pradesh and Soban Singh Jeena Government Institute of Medical Science and Research in Uttarakhand also consist of 100 seats individually. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical Colleges in Himachal Pradesh, with 120 seats, completes the total tally of 770 medical seats with no updated data.
We can also understand the state-wise distribution trends of the 115 vacant medical seats across various states in India for the year 2023. The analysis sheds light on the regional distribution of vacant seats and underscores different states' challenges in improving medical education resources.
Among the states, Gujarat reported the highest number of vacant seats, 43, signaling potential issues in student enrollment or institutional capacity utilization. 41 of these are private, while the remaining two are Government seats. Standing second in terms of vacant medical seats, Tamil Nadu accounted for 23 vacant seats.
