NEET UG 2027: CBT Exam, New Pattern & NTA Latest Updates Explained

As per the recent updates by the NTA and the Ministry of Education, the NEET UG 2027 will be conducted in 1,000 centers across India, spanning 5 or 6 days. The mode of the NEET UG 2027 exam is expected to be computer based. These initiatives are taken by the NTA and the Ministry of Education to make the conduct of the competitive NEET entrance exam better.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is the responsible authority for conducting the NEET exams. It sets the rules & regulations, guidelines, dates & deadlines, and posts all the official information regarding the competitive  exam on its official website. Candidates must visit the official website to view all the latest news & notifications and stay updated with all the dates & deadlines. This article provides an overview of the NEET UG 2026 exam, important discussions between the NTA, Ministry of Education and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, and other vital information.

Overview of NEET UG 2026 Exam

The NEET UG 2026 exam was originally conducted on May 3rd, 2026, which was attended by over 22 lakh candidates across the country. This high-stakes exam was conducted in 5,432 centers across 551 cities in India and 14 centers abroad. However, after investigation, there were concrete evidences of paper leaks through Telegram and other social media channels even after end-to-end secure handling of question papers. The news of the paper leak deeply shocked aspirants, parents, stakeholders, and the public. To ensure fair conduct for all the NEET aspirants, the NTA decided to conduct a re NEET 2026 exam on June 21st, 2026.

The re NEET UG 2026 exam was successfully conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on June 21st, 2026. Additional security measures were put in place by the agency to ensure that no more instances of paper leaks or other discrepancies occur. Over 20 lakh candidates participated in the re NEET UG 2026 exam, a decrease of over 2 lakh candidates from the original exam. The aspirants are now awaiting the results of the re NEET 2026 exam, which is expected to be released between July 20th and 25th, 2026.

Initiatives by the NTA and MoE for NEET UG 2027

The National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) recently briefed the members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee about the initiatives to strengthen the entrance exam system. Here are the initiatives that the NTA and MoE are planning to implement for the NEET UG 2027 exam:

  • 1,000 Exam Centers in 500 Cities for NEET UG 2027: The NEET UG 2027 is expected to be limited to 1,000 exam centers in 500 cities, which is much lesser than the exam conducted in 5,432 centers in 2026. The main purpose of this reduction in the number of exam centers for NEET UG 2027 is for better invigilation and to prevent candidates from cheating in the exam.

  • NEET UG 2027 Exam to be Conducted in Kendriya Vidyalayas: The NEET UG 2027 exam is expected to be conducted in Kendriya Vidyalayas. These are government institutions, which offer a secure and corruption-free testing environment. The Kendriya Vidyalayas are equipped with CCTVs, metal detectors, and jammers, leaving no room for discrepancies.

  • Computer-based Test (CBT): The NEET UG 2027 exam will be a Computer-based Test (CBT). The traditional method of the NEET exam was pen-and-paper based (offline). The implementation of Computer-based Test by the NTA and MoE will further minimize the chances of paper leaks in the exam.

  • 5 Lakh Candidates to Participate Each Day for NEET 2027: As per the NTA and the MoE’s briefing before the Parliamentary Standing Committee, the NEET UG 2027 exam will be conducted spanning 5 or 6 days. Approximately 5 lakh candidates will appear in a day for the NEET UG 2027 exam. Each center will accommodate 500 students. Rather than conducting the NEET exam in a single day for all the aspirants, making just 5 lakh candidates appear for a day for 5 or 6 consecutive days will not only ease the burden of conducting security checks but also avoid overcrowding, giving candidates more space to complete the exam.

In addition to these initiatives, the NTA also stated that there were plans to change the entire organisation, from top to bottom. 150 new posts have already been sanctioned. New officials will be appointed to these posts by October, 2026.

Ongoing Investigations Regarding the NEET UG 2026 Paper Leak

The NEET UG 2026 paper leak not only led to outrage among aspirants but also led to massive nationwide protests. With multiple instances of paper leaks over the years, candidates and students across the country lost their trust in the system. In response to this, the NTA promised to take strict action against those involved with the assistance of CBI.

Some questions regarding the NEET 2026 paper leak investigations were raised during the meeting. The question paper setters and translators involved in the NEET 2026 paper leak have already been arrested.

The investigation to nab all those involved in the NEET 2026 paper leak is still ongoing. The agency has promised that no one who was involved in the NEET 2026 paper leak will be spared.
