Measures to Increase Medical Seats in India for 2025

Many rural areas in India lack access to doctors. The government is taking steps to address this issue by increasing the number of doctors and medical professionals. Here are the steps taken by the government.

  • New Medical Colleges: The government has approved 157 medical colleges under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), out of which 131 colleges are already functioning.
  • Upgrade of the Existing Medical Colleges: Both the Central and State governments are taking initiatives to increase the number of MBBS seats in India in the existing colleges.
  • Construction of Super Specialty Blocks: Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) scheme, 75 projects for constructing super specialty blocks were approved. Out of these, 71 projects have already been completed.
  • New AIIMS: The construction of 22 AIIMS was approved under the Central Sector Scheme. From these new AIIMS, undergraduate courses have commenced at 19 AIIMS.
  • Family Adoption Programme (FAP): The Family Adoption Programme is an initiative by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It aims to provide equal access to healthcare in rural areas.
  • Hard Area Allowance: Doctors serving in rural and remote areas receive the hard area allowance. Providing such allowances further motivates doctors to serve in those areas.
