To make medical professionals' services accessible to all citizens, the NMC grants permission to establish new medical colleges.

India is seeing a growing demand for medical institutes and professionals. The National Medical Commission aims to improve access to quality and economical medical education and ensure the allocation of quality medical professionals nationwide.

To make medical professionals' services accessible to all citizens, the NMC grants permission to establish new medical colleges. The commission also entertains applications for seat intake upgrades for interested institutes.

Parameters like total bed count, hospital square footage, and minimum personnel requirements, among others, determine if a college can be granted permission to offer medical degrees. The commission has also set rules and regulations for colleges to qualify for seat intake upgrades.

Existing Medical College Applications for Seat Increment

Colleges also possess a provision to apply for an increment in their approved MBBS seat intakes. The approval and amount are completely based on the merit of the college’s application and its current seat intakes. Take, for example, if a medical college currently accepts 100 MBBS seats, depending on its application. The National Medical Commission then provides an increment of 50 to 100 seats.

For the academic year 2024-25, 58 colleges applied for seat increments. The pie chart below shows these applications by college type.
