AYUSH Meets Modern Healthcare: Bridging Tradition and Science

A Hello Mentor Overview of AYUSH Meets Modern Healthcare: Bridging Tradition and Science

Healthcare stands as a rapidly emerging sector in India. The growing interest in the alternative medicine fields of AYUSH validates the previous fact. Ancient practices of allied medicine like Ayurveda have been resurging as a complementary approach to modern medical practices. This editorial gleans into the foothold of AYUSH as a career option for interested candidates wishing to pursue domains of alternative medicine.

In a world dominated by cutting-edge medical technologies and pharmaceutical advancements, ancient practices like Ayurveda (AYUSH) are experiencing a resurgence as a complementary approach to modern medicine. People have benefited from the AYUSH system worldwide since time immemorial. Government and administrative authorities promote the AYUSH system according to their needs at every stage.

Integrating AYUSH with Modern Medicine

India is home to some of the world's most diversified cultural and religious groupings. Many of these cultural groups continue to use alternative forms of medicine due to significant differences in wealth, education, and access to AYUSH healthcare.

With its inception in 2014, the Government of India, through the Ministry of AYUSH, aims to bridge the gap between aspirants and their pursuit of alternative medicine. India's oldest alternative medicine systems - Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (AYUSH), are over 2000 years old.

Courses such as BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, and B. Pharm provide students with a pathway to the domain of AYUSH. While AYUSH and modern medicine have been viewed historically as separate entities, there is a growing integration day by day. Many healthcare providers today understand the value of incorporating Ayurvedic principles into conventional medical care, particularly in managing chronic conditions and promoting overall wellness. Integrative medicine clinics offer a comprehensive approach that combines the best of both worlds.

The Prominence of AYUSH in Daily Life

Ayurveda revolves around the belief that each individual possesses a unique constitution or 'dosha,' comprising three fundamental energies – Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). According to AYUSH Ayurvedic philosophy, an imbalance in these energies leads to ailments, and treatments aim to restore harmony through diet, herbal remedies, yoga, meditation, and cleansing practices.

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is an integrated Indian Degree focusing on the Ayurvedic medicine and surgery system. It is a 5.6-year course, including a year-long internship with live practicals. Medical Mentor provides students interested in pursuing BAMS with a comprehensive guide to guide them through all enrolment procedures.

Ayurveda and other branches of AYUSH employ several natural treatments and therapies to restore bodily balance. One of the primary appeals of Ayurveda lies in its emphasis on prevention rather than cure. Modern medicine often focuses on treating symptoms after they manifest, while Ayurveda aims to prevent illnesses by fostering overall well-being and balance within the body.

AYUSH Treatments and Therapies

One of the distinguishing features of AYUSH is its emphasis on the mind-body connection. Ayurvedic AYUSH practices include meditation, mindfulness, and stress management techniques, recognising the impact of mental well-being on physical health.

The BAMS degree comprises three - 1.5-year-long professional courses. Here, students learn about human anatomy, physiology, and the history of Ayurvedic Medicine. The second course includes toxicology and pharmacology. Upon completing the final subjects of surgery, ENT, dermatology, and Gynaecology, a graduate is entitled ‘Vaidyar’ before their name.

In an era where chronic stress is a prevalent health concern, Ayurvedic AYUSH practices such as yoga and meditation have gained recognition in modern medicine for their positive impacts on mental health. AYUSH Studies have highlighted the benefits of these practices in reducing stress and anxiety and even in complementing treatments for conditions like depression and PTSD that require intensive care and attention to detail.

AYUSH : Herbal Medicine in Ayurveda

Herbal medicine is a cornerstone of Ayurveda and AYUSH. Professionals employ arrays of plants and herbs believed to possess medicinal properties for treatments. Modern scientific research is increasingly validating the efficacy of Ayurvedic herbs in treating various ailments. At Medical Mentor, we have had several cases where students disheartened by an undesirable NEET score have found an AYUSH course to be the best fit to begin their medical journey.

One student who approached Hello Mentor had a NEET score that did not meet his aspiration to pursue MBBS. Through our counselling sessions, he realised the avenues of Biotechnology, Engineering, Ayurveda, and Dentistry. Owing to his good CET score, his medical mentor helped him pursue a career in veterinary science.

AYUSH's resurgence in the modern medical landscape highlights a shift towards more holistic, patient-centered care. The potential for a harmonious collaboration between Ayurveda and modern medicine has become increasingly promising. Ultimately, the future of healthcare lies in a balanced approach that draws from AYUSH's rich traditions while embracing modern science advancements.
