The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, is expected to submit a petition to the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start medical education in the institute. As per the petition, the institute is expected to seek approval for the MD course with 20 NEET PG seats. The institute has already recruited 20 teaching staff to train candidates for the academic year 2026-27, if approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Plans have been made by the institute that the academic training will be conducted at Dr. B.C. Roy Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, a medical school and research institute at Balarampur (located just outside the IIT Kharagpur campus).
An inspection team from the NMC is expected to arrive at the college to assess the infrastructure before approving the submitted petition. The MBBS plans at the institute are on hold due to infrastructure constraints. The director of IIT Kharagpur, Suman Chakraborty, has stated that the petition seeking the approval of the MD course in the institute is expected to be submitted to the NMC by March 31st, 2026. He also stated that "We will be the first IIT to launch a postgraduate medical program. We have already recruited 20 skilled doctors. They will teach the students who enroll in the MD program”. "To start a medical programme, an institute must have a medical college supported by a hospital. We have both. If the council permits us, IIT will start the programme from this academic year. We are ready”, he further stated.
The main purpose of IIT Kharagpur’s initiative to start the MD course at the institute is to focus on technology-powered medical education and research programmes. The institute plans to make some changes to the MD curriculum by exercising its autonomy. The inclusion of the medical course in an IIT institute may bring forth a new technology-empowered medical education and research programme, the director said. When asked about the inclusion of MBBS course in the institute, he said, “When an MD programme is run in an institution for some years, it is quite logical to introduce an MBBS programme there as well”.
Candidates are advised to regularly check the news for updates on IIT Kharagpur so that they do not miss out on the opportunities in the institute.
