Karantaka boasts of 24 government colleges with 3,750 seats and 47 private institutions providing 8,195 seats. The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) manages admissions, overseeing 85% of government and 100% of private college seats.
Karnataka has 71 medical colleges, collectively offering 11,945 MBBS seats, making it the third-largest state in India in terms of medical education capacity. Karnataka had 68 medical colleges in 2023; 24 were government colleges with 3,750 seats, while the remaining 44 were private institutions offering 7,845 seats. As of 2024, the three newly added private medical colleges bring the number of private medical college seats in Karnataka to 8,195.
The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) oversees the admissions counselling process, managing 85% of the State Quota seats in government colleges and 100% of the seats in private colleges. Nationwide, there are currently 731 medical colleges offering 1,12,112 MBBS seats and more than 29,088 BDS seats.

The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) Karnataka and the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved three new medical Medical Colleges. These Medical Colleges, BGS Medical College & Hospital in Nagarur, Bengaluru North, PES University Institute of Health Sciences & Research Centre in Konnappa Agrahara, Electronic City, Bengaluru, and S R Medical College in Bagalkot, collectively contribute 350 new MBBS seats, enhancing the capacity for medical education and training in the state.
1. BGS Medical College & Hospital, located in Nagarur, Nelamangala, Bengaluru North, Karnataka, is a premier institution that aims to provide world-class medical education and healthcare services. With an intake capacity of 150 seats for the MBBS program, this Medical College is poised to become a center of excellence in medical education.
2. PES University Institute of Health Sciences & Research Centre, situated in Konnappa Agrahara, Medical College in Electronic City, Bengaluru, is a part of the prestigious PES University. With an intake of 100 MBBS seats, this institution is dedicated to providing high-quality medical education and fostering innovation in healthcare.
3. S R Medical College, located in Bagalkot, Karnataka, is a new entrant in the field of medical education with an intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats. The Medical College aims to provide quality medical education and healthcare services to the rural population of Karnataka.

KEA Counselling: 85% seats in government colleges (3,039), 5,295 for private colleges, and 188 for Deemed universities.
The DME allows only 85% of the seats in Government Colleges because 15% are allocated under the All India Quota (AIQ) through MCC counselling. DME has complete authority to allot all the seats in private colleges.
Private colleges in Karnataka are categorised into Non-Minority Colleges, State Universities, and Minority Colleges.
