Karnataka offered 12,395 MBBS seats across 71 medical colleges for the 2024-25 academic year. The state currently houses 24 government medical colleges that collectively offer 3800 MBBS seats. After approval from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) and pending the NMC's final approval, an estimated 900 new government MBBS seats are expected to be added in 2025-26.

900 New Government MBBS Seats Likely in Karnataka: DME
Two new government medical colleges proposed in Ramanagara and Kanakapura, if approved by the NMC, are expected to add a further 200-250 MBBS seats. Overall, Karnataka is expected to add 900 new government MBBS seats in the 2025-26 academic year.
Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute offers 250 MBBS seats, the highest in the state. Chikkaballapura Institute of Medical Sciences has the fewest MBBS seats of any government medical college in Karnataka, at 100. Vijaynagar Institute of Medical Sciences in Bellary, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute, and Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences in Hubli each consist of 200 MBBS seats. 900 new MBBS seats are likely to be added to Karnataka's total seat tally of 12,395 seats in 2025-26. 2 new government colleges in Kanakapura and Ramnagara, which could not secure the National Medical Commission's approval in 2024, also stand a high chance of obtaining approval this year.
Additionally, Karnataka remains the only state apart from Jharkhand that offers government quota MBBS seats in Deemed Universities. These 189 MBBS seats, available at six Deemed Universities in the state, provide opportunities for students who may not secure government quota seats but still wish to pursue medical education at a relatively lower cost.
