The NEET UG 2024 exam, a standardised medical entrance test for aspirants nationwide, witnessed unprecedented participation with a record of 23,33,297 candidates appearing for the exam. Of these, 13,16,268 candidates qualified, and 67 students achieved a perfect score of 720.
Parents and students were quick to voice their concerns when they discovered stark irregularities in the notices released by the National Testing Agency, the organization responsible for conducting the examination. This issue sparked a heated debate about the fairness of the notices for candidates nationwide.
Additionally, six of all the top scorers in NEET UG 2024 students have the same seat number sequence and hail from Haryana. This is indicative that they’re from the same exam centre. Concerns were raised after scorecards with marks 718 and 719 circulated over several social media platforms.
NTA considered such cases/representations and the normalization formula, devised and adopted by the apex court in a 2018 judgment, to address the time loss faced by candidates. The loss of time during NEET UG exam was ascertained, and such candidates were compensated with grace marks. So their marks can be 718 or 719, too," said NTA's official spokesperson.
Ruiee Kapoor, a parent representative, found NTA's clarification unsatisfactory, as a score of 718 or 719 is technically improbable.
In an attempt to restore transparency across the conducting of the NEET UG exam, the National Testing Agency allowed opportunities for 1563 candidates to appear for the exam again. Fresh Admit Cards were released on June 20 for these medical aspirants, with the re-exam being conducted on June 23, 2024.
Seven hundred fifty students were absent for the NEET UG 2024 re-exam. A detailed breakdown of the re-exam attendance is below:
The total applicant pool's collective performance decides the corresponding year's qualifying cut-off. The table below provides a deeper look into this, highlighting the average marks out of 720 for qualified NEET UG candidates across the years.
This has led to two trains of thought amongst the affected factions: a complete cancellation of the NEET UG 2024 exam or a partial one, only targeted to specific applicants.

Both sides of the argument make compelling points. A significant factor for the group proposing a complete cancellation is the exam's unfairness because of a leaked NEET UG paper, which not only makes it unfair for all the candidates but also threatens the future credibility of the exam. Setting a precedent for any malpractices not only does right by the affected students but also ensures the future credibility of the exam.
Also, the high improbability of identifying the leak pushes many factions to propose a complete cancellation of NEET UG 2024. Those advocating for a partial re-exam argue that a total reschedule would disrupt the academic year and waste valuable time for candidates nationwide. If the leak can be localised and pointed to a specific pool of candidates, only those should bear the brunt of malpractice, thus separating the rot from the ripe.
