The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) - a nationwide exam for undergraduate admissions to medical, dental, AYUSH, and nursing courses in India. The exam date for NEET UG 2024 is May 5, 2024 (Sunday). According to Section 14 of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine Act (2020), it is the uniform test for admission to undergraduate courses in BAMS, BUMS, and BSMS disciplines.
The controversy began with the NEET UG 2024 examination held on May 5, which saw 13,16,268 qualified students vying for 1,08,988 MBBS seats in medical colleges nationwide. The results, announced on June 4, were soon followed by various complaints and allegations of malpractice.
The petitioners raised serious concerns about the exam's fairness and transparency. They alleged that over 1,500 students were awarded grace marks, which significantly skewed the overall rankings. This led to widespread dissatisfaction among students and parents, who believed the irregularities compromised the exam's integrity.
NEET UG 2024 re-exam was conducted on June 23, 2024, following the Centre's significant decision to cancel the scorecards of 1563 candidates due to previously awarded grace marks. The results were declared on June 30.
