NEET UG 2024 Paper Leak In Telegram Fake: NTA Tells Supreme Court

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court saying that viral videos showing photos of the NEET UG 2024 exam paper leak on Telegram on May 4 were fake.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court saying that viral videos showing photos of the NEET UG 2024 exam paper leak on Telegram on May 4 were fake.

The controversy began with the NEET UG 2024 examination held on May 5. 13,16,268 qualified students are now competing for 1,08,988 MBBS seats in medical colleges nationwide. The results, announced on June 4, were soon followed by various paper leak complaints and allegations of mass malpractice.

The petitioners have raised serious concerns about the NEET UG 2024 exam's fairness and transparency. They allege that over 1,500 students were awarded grace marks, which significantly skewed the overall rankings. This has led to widespread dissatisfaction among students and parents, who believe the irregularities and paper leaks have compromised the NEET UG 2024 exam's integrity.

Responding to the petition, the Supreme Court has directed the NTA to address the allegations of the NEET UG 2024 exam paper leak and submit a detailed response by July 8, when the matter will be heard in court.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was called to look into the allegations of NEET UG 2024 exam fraud and paper leak, alongside the legal process. The CBI conducted a thorough investigation across multiple states, resulting in several arrests and the interrogation of numerous suspects involved in the wrongdoing.

The investigation's goal is to uncover and bring to justice those responsible for undermining the honesty and fairness of the NEET UG 2024 exam. President Droupadi Murmu, in a joint session of Parliament, stressed the government's commitment to upholding the integrity of all examinations and appointments.

Key takeaways from the affidavit on NEET UG 2024

In an affidavit presented to the Supreme Court, the NTA stated that the image's timestamp had been altered to give a false impression of an early NEET UG 2024 paper leak.

On July 8, the Supreme Court requested that the National Testing Agency (NTA) provide their response regarding the scope of the NEET UG 2024 paper leak and the potential identification of wrongdoers.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had asked for details from the NTA and the CBI regarding the reported “NEET UG 2024 paper leak”. The bench noted that if the NEET UG 2024 exam's integrity was compromised and it was not possible to distinguish between fraudulent beneficiaries and honest candidates, a re-test would be necessary.

During Wednesday's proceedings, senior advocate Narender Hooda mentioned that the NEET UG 2024 exam question papers leaked through the Telegram app. However, per the NTA's affidavit, the images circulated on social media were manipulated and not genuine.

The NTA's affidavit states, "The video in question supposedly shows a leaked NEET UG 2024 exam paper on Telegram on May 4, but one of the images, which was altered, displays a time stamp of 5:40 pm on May 5, 2024. The time stamp was changed to create a false impression of an early paper leak."

The affidavit adds, "Furthermore, a neutral third party shared a video demonstrating how the NEET UG 2024 exam date could be altered to display May 4 instead of the actual date." According to the NTA's affidavit, the distribution of marks in NEET UG 2024 was analyzed at the national, state, city, and center levels.

The NTA's statement affirmed that the marks' distribution appears normal, with no external factors affecting it. The affidavit also outlined the measures to ensure the confidential printing, transportation, and distribution of NEET UG 2024 question papers.

Additionally, the NTA informed the Supreme Court that it would be referencing the findings of the IIT Madras report during the upcoming proceedings. As stated in the affidavit submitted by the government, the experts from IIT Madras reported an overall increase in students' marks, especially within the 550 to 720 range.

The NTA also restated that the reported paper leak in Patna has not compromised the integrity of the entire NEET UG 2024 exam.

"The reported incident of a possible paper leak in Patna does not appear to have impacted the overall conduct of the NEET UG 2024 exam, as the investigating agencies have found only a small number of students involved compared to the total number of candidates who took the NEET UG 2024 exam," the NTA stated.

While dictating the order, the top court asked for measures to be taken to preserve the sanctity of the NEET UG 2024 exam so that such incidents could be avoided in the future.

The center said that the counselling process for NEET UG 2024 will consist of four rounds, commencing in the third week of July.
