NMC Increases MBBS Seats to 1.39 Lakh: 27 New Medical Colleges Added
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a total of 27 new medical colleges for the NEET 2026-27 session. 10,463 new total MBBS seats in India in 2026 have been added to various colleges, giving immense opportunities for candidates looking to pursue medical education. The addition of new medical colleges and seats brings the total medical colleges and seats in 2026 to 845 and 1,39,439, respectively.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the responsible body for regulating and approving medical colleges and education in India. The NMC sets standards for medical education, oversees MBBS and postgraduate medical programs, and works to improve the quality of medical education in the country. A total of 27 new medical colleges along with 10,463 MBBS seats have been added for the NEET 2026-27 session, giving additional opportunities for candidates to pursue their dreams in medical education. The total MBBS seats in India in 2026 have reached a new milestone following the latest approvals by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The National Medical Commission (NMC) is the body responsible for overseeing medical education and the medical profession in India. Established under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, it replaced the Medical Council of India (MCI) with the aim of creating a more transparent and accountable system for medical education and healthcare.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) is responsible for setting standards for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, approving and monitoring medical colleges, maintaining the National Medical Register, and ensuring ethical practices among medical professionals. Through its regulations and guidelines, the Commission plays a key role in improving the quality of medical education and strengthening healthcare services across the country.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently approved medical colleges and seats all across India. A total of 10,463 new MBBS seats and 27 new medical colleges have been opened for the NEET 2026-27 session, strengthening the medical infrastructure in the country.
Candidates preparing for NEET 2026 should be aware of the total MBBS seats in India in 2026 before planning their counselling strategy. The increase in the total MBBS seats in India in 2026 is expected to improve admission opportunities across government, private, and deemed medical colleges. It will also improve access to quality medical education, especially in regions that previously had fewer medical institutions. In the long run, these new colleges will help produce more qualified doctors, strengthening India's healthcare system and improving access to medical services across the country.
Here’s an institute-type breakdown of the newly added medical colleges for the NEET 2026-27 session:
Note: 2 medical colleges, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR) (deemed) and GR College (private) did not participate in 2025. Though they existed in 2025, they were not granted permission by the NMC. In 2026, however, the NMC approved these 2 medical colleges.
There are a total of 845 medical colleges for the NEET 2026-27 session, an increase of 27 new medical colleges from 2025. This is a 3.3% increase from 2025 to 2026. From the table above, it is clear that the highest increment among all the institute types was the private medical college type, with 19 colleges. In 2025, there were 314 private medical colleges in 2025, and now in 2026, there are 333 colleges. Also, 7 new government medical colleges have been added for the NEET 2026-27 session. This brings the total government medical colleges in the country to 428, making it the institute type with the highest number of colleges. 1 deemed medical college has also been approved for the NEET 2026-27 session.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has increased the total number of MBBS seats in India from 1,28,976 in 2025 to 1,39,439 in 2026, adding 10,463 new seats. This represents an overall 8.11% increase in MBBS seats across the country, offering more opportunities for NEET 2026 aspirants.
Among all institution types, private medical colleges recorded the highest increase, with 7,500 new seats, taking the total from 55,244 to 62,744. This is a 13.58% growth and accounts for 71.68% of all newly added MBBS seats. A total of 2,113 MBBS seats were added to Government medical colleges, increasing their total from 58,583 to 60,696, which is a 3.61% rise and contributes 20.19% of the total seat increase.
Deemed universities also saw an increase of 850 MBBS seats, taking their total from 12,249 to 13,099. This represents a 6.94% increase and contributes 8.12% of the overall seat expansion. Meanwhile, there was no change in the number of seats offered by AIIMS (2,257 seats), Central Universities (250 seats), JIPMER (243 seats), and AFMS (150 seats).
Looking at the overall seat distribution for 2026, private medical colleges hold the largest share with 62,744 seats (45%), closely followed by government medical colleges with 60,696 seats (43.53%). Deemed universities account for 13,099 seats (9.39%), while AIIMS contributes 2,257 seats (1.62%). The remaining 643 seats (0.46%) are offered by Central Universities, JIPMER, and AFMS combined. These additions significantly expand medical education capacity and improve admission opportunities for NEET 2026 candidates.
Karnataka has received a significant boost in MBBS seat capacity for the 2026-27 academic session, with the National Medical Commission (NMC) approving 1,450 additional MBBS seats across the state. Of these, 400 MBBS seats (27.6%) have been added through three newly established medical colleges, and the remaining 1,050 seats (72.4%) have been approved by increasing the intake capacity of 18 existing medical colleges.
The three newly approved medical colleges together contribute 400 new MBBS seats. G R Medical College Hospital & Research Centre and Alva's Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Moodbidri have each been allotted 150 seats, while Chettinad Institute of Medical Education and Research, KGF has been approved with 100 seats. All three are private medical colleges, providing additional opportunities for NEET aspirants seeking admission in Karnataka.
The larger share of the seat expansion comes from existing medical colleges, which have received approval for 1,050 additional MBBS seats. Among these, BGS Global Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore, PES University Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Bangalore, and Sri Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, T Begur recorded the highest increase of 100 seats each, with the seat intakes rising from 150 to 250 seats.
The remaining 15 medical colleges received an increase of 50 seats each, taking the combined addition to 750 seats. Among the 1,050 MBBS seats added to existing colleges, private medical colleges account for 750 seats (71.4%), deemed universities contribute 200 seats (19.0%), and government medical colleges add 100 seats (9.5%). The addition of 1,450 MBBS seats in Karnataka in 2026 will significantly improve admission opportunities for NEET 2026 candidates while strengthening the state's medical education infrastructure.
