The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) conducts counselling for 100% of the seats in private medical colleges in the state. Private Medical College MBBS Seat Reservations in Karnataka

 

There are a total of 12,395 MBBS seats across 71 medical colleges in the state of Karnataka. This places Karnataka as the number 1 state with the highest number of MBBS seats in India. There are possibilities of additional 1,850 MBBS seats after the approval from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS). The addition of new MBBS seats in Karnataka further strengthens the medical education infrastructure in the state.

 

Out of the total MBBS seats in Karnataka, 5,995 seats are distributed across 35 private medical colleges. This is 48.36% of the total MBBS seats in Karnataka.

Types of Private Medical College MBBS Seat Reservations in Karnataka

 

Karnataka has 3 types of private medical college MBBS seat reservations, which include state universities, non-minority, and minority colleges. The following are the differences between the three types of private medical college MBBS seat reservations in Karnataka:

 

  • State University Private Medical College MBBS Seat Reservations: These are private medical colleges that were granted ‘Deemed to be University Status’ by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Only after the demonstration of excellent academic standards, contributions in research, and ability to offer quality education by the private institutions will the status be granted by the UGC. The presence of a higher number of deemed medical colleges in Karnataka sets it as a renowned medical education provider in the country. Some of the examples of deemed medical colleges are Kasturba Medical College (Manipal and Mangalore) and Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (Belgaum).


  • Non-minority Private Medical College MBBS Seat Reservations: The non-minority medical colleges are private medical colleges that do not have any religious or linguistic affiliations. Simply put, these colleges are open to all the candidates irrespective of their language or religion. Some of the most popular non-minority private medical colleges in Karnataka are M. S. Ramaiah Medical College and Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences.


  • Minority Private Medical College MBBS Seat Reservations: These are private medical colleges that have some of the MBBS seats reserved exclusively for specific minority candidates. The reserved minority MBBS seats in these private medical colleges are not open to all. There are 2 major types of minorities in Karnataka, which include linguistic minority and religious minority.

    1. Linguistic Minority Private Medical College MBBS Seat Reservations: The private medical colleges in Karnataka offer reservations for 3 linguistic minorities: Tamil, Telugu, and Tulu. The linguistic minority seats are reserved for candidates who speak these languages. Earlier, there was linguistic reservation for the Kodava minority; however, currently, no college in Karnataka offers Kodava minority seats. Sri Chamundeshwari Medical College, Oxford Medical College, and A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences are examples of linguistic minority colleges.

    2. Religious Minority Private Medical College MBBS Seat Reservations: There are seat reservations across private medical colleges in Karnataka under 2 types of religious minorities: Christian and Muslim. Candidates belonging to any one of these religions are eligible to apply for the religious minority seats. St. John's Medical College and Father Muller Medical College are examples of religious minority colleges. Out of the total 150 MBBS seats at St. John's Medical College, 130 seats are reserved for the Roman Catholic candidates.

Out of the total 2,848 MBBS seats under the private quota, 28.16% (802) is reserved for the General Merit Private (GMP) category. 1.23% of the MBBS seats (130) are reserved for the Roman Catholic (RC) category. 8.67% of the total MBBS seats (247) under the private quota in Karnataka are reserved for the General Merit Private under Hyderabad Karnataka (GMPH) category. 28% of the MBBS seats (800) are available for candidates under the open category. The remaining 30.5% of the MBBS seats (869) are reserved for the minority candidates, the highest among other private medical college MBBS seat reservations.
