KEA KCET Counselling 2026 Postponed Due to Final Seat Matrix Approval Delay
The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has postponed the KCET 2026 counselling due to delays in the approval of the final seat matrix. The round 1 KCET 2026 counselling is expected to be conducted on June 13th, 2026.
The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has postponed the KCET 2026 counselling process after the final seat matrix required for admissions was not approved on time. The KEA is now likely to begin the first round of KCET 2026 counselling on June 13th, 2026, although an official revised schedule is still awaited. Candidates must regularly visit the official website and stay updated on all dates & deadlines for the KCET 2026 counselling process.
The Karnataka Common Entrance Test 2026 (KCET 2026) is the state-level entrance exam conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for admission to courses such as Engineering, B. Pharm, Agriculture, and Veterinary Sciences in the state’s colleges. The KCET 2026 was conducted from April 22nd to 24th, 2026, in offline mode.
The questions in KCET 2026 were from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Candidates could opt for either Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The KCET 2026 consisted of a total of 180 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). Each subject in the KCET 2026 consisted of 60 questions. 1 mark was awarded for a correct answer, and there was no negative marking.
The KEA KCET 2026 results were released on June 6th, 2026. A total of 2,92,782 candidates qualified and secured ranks out of the 3,09,014 candidates who appeared for the exam.

The reason behind the postponement is the delay in receiving the final approved seat matrix and fee structure from the Karnataka government. The seat matrix is a crucial document that specifies the number of seats available in each college, branch, and reservation category. Without its approval, KEA cannot initiate the option-entry process or conduct seat allotment.
The KEA had released a draft engineering seat matrix and invited objections from stakeholders. After reviewing these objections, the final version was expected to be approved and published before counselling commenced. However, the approval process has taken longer than anticipated, resulting in the postponement of counselling activities.
This is not the first time seat matrix related delays have impacted counselling schedules. KEA had previously emphasised the importance of receiving seat matrix details from various departments on time to ensure a smooth counselling process across professional courses.

The postponement impacts all candidates who secured ranks in KCET 2026 and were planning to participate in the counselling process. More than 2.92 lakh candidates obtained ranks this year and are eligible for admissions through KEA counselling. These students will now have to wait until the revised schedule is announced before they can proceed with option entry and seat selection.
The counselling process covers admissions to a wide range of professional courses offered across Karnataka. These include engineering, agriculture, veterinary sciences, pharmacy, and other allied programs offered by government, aided, and private institutions. Since seat allocation depends entirely on the approved seat matrix, all streams covered under KCET counselling are affected by the delay.
Candidates belonging to general, reserved, and special categories will all have to follow the revised counselling schedule once it is published by KEA. Until then, no option entry or seat allotment activities can begin.
While the counselling process has been postponed, candidates can use this additional time to prepare for the next stages of admission. Students should ensure that all required documents are readily available and that any pending verification requirements are completed as soon as possible.
Candidates are also advised to research colleges and courses thoroughly and prepare a preliminary preference list. Since the option-entry process can be competitive, having a clear understanding of preferred institutions and branches beforehand can help students make informed choices when the portal opens. Experts recommend prioritising genuine preferences rather than attempting to predict allotment trends.
In addition, candidates should regularly check official KEA notifications to avoid missing important announcements related to counselling dates, document verification schedules, and option-entry timelines. KEA has also recently introduced the KEA Connect mobile application to help students receive guidance during the counselling process.
Once the Karnataka government approves the final seat matrix, the KEA is expected to release a detailed counselling notification. The process will likely begin with document verification, followed by web-based option entry and mock allotment. After candidates finalise their choices, the KEA will conduct seat allotment based on merit, reservation criteria, and candidate preferences.
The postponement of KCET 2026 counselling is due to delays in finalising and approving the seat matrix required for admissions. While the development may temporarily affect admission timelines, it ensures that seat distribution and counselling procedures are completed accurately and transparently.
