This article contains the latest information of MBBS intake at 150 students for new medical colleges.
Recently, NMC (National Medical Commission), the regulatory body, unveiled new guidelines regarding the intake capacity for new medical colleges established from 2024 - 25. The capacity will be restricted to 150 seats only. These regulations have been set to focus on improving the quality of medical education and considering the increasing burden on hospitals and medical faculty.
The revised regulation under the Under Graduate Minimum Standards Regulations (UG-MSR) issued on August 16, 2023, will not be implemented in the old medical colleges with a batch size of more than 150 to 250 students.
If a college has a functional hospital with faculties in all the clinical departments, it can start with only 50 seats. The hospital must have a capacity of at least 200 beds and 20 ICU beds. The hospital also requires a basic setup to conduct classes in the MBBS phase I and II. This simplifies the process of establishing medical colleges for working hospitals.
