Breaking: NMC Caps MBBS intake at 150 Students For New Medical Colleges.

This article contains the latest information of MBBS intake at 150 students for new medical colleges.

Recently, NMC (National Medical Commission), the regulatory body, unveiled new guidelines regarding the intake capacity for new medical colleges established from 2024 - 25. The capacity will be restricted to 150 seats only. These regulations have been set to focus on improving the quality of medical education and considering the increasing burden on hospitals and medical faculty.

The revised regulation under the Under Graduate Minimum Standards Regulations (UG-MSR) issued on August 16, 2023, will not be implemented in the old medical colleges with a batch size of more than 150 to 250 students.

If a college has a functional hospital with faculties in all the clinical departments, it can start with only 50 seats. The hospital must have a capacity of at least 200 beds and 20 ICU beds. The hospital also requires a basic setup to conduct classes in the MBBS phase I and II. This simplifies the process of establishing medical colleges for working hospitals.

What does the recent NMC notification say?

The NMC's revised regulations address concerns by implementing a manageable student-to-faculty ratio.

You can visit the official document for a deeper understanding.

Below is a comprehensive explanation of the most recent notification to ensure you are fully informed:

NMC Recommends Reduced Batch Sizes

A recent statement from the NMC states that reducing batch sizes will improve faculty-to-student interaction and make learning more personalized.

Medical experts believe this new regulation will enhance the learning experience for future doctors. Smaller batches will allow professors and instructors to give more personalized attention to individual students. This will also create more opportunities for students to gain hands-on training in laboratories and clinical settings, leading to a more well-rounded medical education.

UG_MSR 2023 Guidelines for New Medical Colleges

The regulations of UG_MSR 2023 provide new medical colleges with some flexibility. Although the maximum intake is limited to 150 students, colleges can have a more petite student body if they meet specific criteria. Institutions with a fully operational hospital with at least 220 beds and a faculty comprising qualified personnel in all clinical departments will commence with a batch size of 50 students.

NMC's Strategy for MBBS Seat Distribution

The NMC has also established a minimum requirement for the number of MBBS seats per state, following a ratio of 100:1000000 (100 seats for every 10 lakh residents). This ensures enough medical graduates meet the population's healthcare needs.

Impact on existing medical colleges

The regulations of NMC apply only to new medical colleges established from the year 2024- 2025 academic session onwards. Existing medical colleges with larger batch sizes are not mandated to reduce their intake.
